The airport was originally started by Walter Paepcke and John Spachner in 1946 as a privately owned, public use gravel landing strip for general aviation aircraft. The airport has grown considerably since then but serving the general aviation community remains a priority. The airport has over 103-based aircraft ranging from gliders to large corporate jets. In fact, the use of corporate aviation is a principle mode of transportation for many people traveling to the Aspen area.
