The airport was originally started by Walter Paepcke and John Spachner in 1946 as a privately owned, public use gravel landing strip for general aviation aircraft. The airport has grown considerably since then but serving the general aviation community remains a priority. The airport has over 103-based aircraft ranging from gliders to large corporate jets. In fact, the use of corporate aviation is a principle mode of transportation for many people traveling to the Aspen area. Airport businesses offer aviation fuels, aircraft storage, flight training, sight seeing flights, mountain flying courses, glider flights, charter flights, flight catering, flight planning facilities, passenger lounges, rental cars and full aircraft services and repairs.
